How to Get Google to Send Traffic to Your WordPress Blog by John P Mitchell

After recently moving a number of blogs from Blogger to a hosted WordPress Blog I discovered a BIG problem, Google stopped sending me traffic.

I managed to resolve the problem, and after a lot of hardwork, frustration and after what seemed like a life time, Google has started sending traffic to my new WordPress blog. I naively thought that this would be straight forward process and I wasn't alone as when I first started writing about this issue on my blog I was surprised to find that this is a common problem.

So when I finally found the solution I thought I would create an article and summarise the steps taken to resolve the problem.

It was certainly easier to get Google traffic to a blogger hosted blog as most of this process seemed to be automated.

These are the 7 steps I followed to get Google to send traffic to my WordPress blog:

Step 1: Tell Google your site exists, go to Google's add URL page and enter your sites details.

Step 2: Register an account with Google Webmaster tools. This will give you a meta tag so that you can be tracked by Google's tool set, by using the Google Integration Toolkit plugin for WordPress.

Step 3: Install the Google Integration Toolkit plugin for WordPress. This plugin is useful to integrate a number of different Google tools into your blog i.e. Webmaster toolkit, AdSense, & Analytics.

Step 4: Install the XML-Sitemap plugin for WordPress. This plugin is useful as it automatically creates and updates a XML-Site map of your site. Sitemaps are useful as they help search engines like Google crawl through your site.

Step 5: Install the All in One SEO plugin for WordPress. This plugin allows you to potentially increase your page ranking by incorporating SEO techniques into your blog. When you create a post a new section becomes visible which allows you to fill in a few details for SEO, then the plugin does the rest.

Step 6: Create some internal links. Google appears to like internal links, so I wrote a blog post which linked to every other post.

Step 7: Allow Google to see your site. Make sure your robots.txt file allows Google to crawl through your site - Google WebMaster tools can easily provide a working robots.txt file. There is also an option in the privacy settings of WordPress to block or allow search Engines, make sure this is set to allow.

For one, blogging is a personal thing. Individuals can do it. No need for technical skills. No dependency on anyone else. Just a few downloads, Cut-paste. Plug and play.

Further, blogs enable expression of ideas on the fly. Sitting in your bedroom you can form an idea or change an existing one and shoot it out to the world. A 'blog' is in fact short for 'web-log'... a log / diary / journal on the web.

What's more, blogs, being 'democratic' are favored by search engines. They consider blogs to be more 'valid' sources of information than websites, which would be biased by the website owner. For example, in Philips website you may find little or nothing about GE. But in Mr Jones blog he'd rip apart both the companies (and more) or praise them from actual user experience. Search engines reckon that prospective buyers of electronic products would get more feedback from a half-dozen such blogs than they would from as many websites... so they rank blogs high!

Especially because they are permanently 'hosted' on high-power servers, many of which offer e-commerce facilities (which blogs do not currently feature).

So can't a blog be hosted on a high-power server? Yes, it sure can... at as little as $7 a month. But majority of blog owners prefer the free hosting options provided by Google (blogspot dot com) or WordPress dot com. I have a hosted blog at sandeepnath dot com and it serves me well to communicate and reach out to the world.

This apart, there are a few great advantages in self-hosting:

1. I can control my domain name (sandeepnath dot com) which would otherwise be sandeepnath dot WordPress dot com (which is ugh!).
2. As a self-hosted blogger you can use a lot of plug-ins. These are especially good for making your blog search engine friendly (all-in-one-seo-pack and site map creator).
3. You can also monitor visitor statistics and get reports which can help analyze where business could come from (based on what people read more).
4. You can have a unique design (free hosting implies you choose from pre-built templates).
5. You can drive people from advertising straight into a business discussion you have posted on a special page.

Again, there is a flip side. Free hosted blogs are picked up faster by search engines since they are all over the place and their networks are larger. But once you master the art of knocking the search engines doors with the right keywords in your paid-hosting blog, you will have your 'own' asset. I have heard of cases where the free blog got wiped out by some server administrator and years of work was vaporized in a flash.

The blogging platform wars are getting really interesting and much of the discussion I find myself in lately revolves around what is happening with various CMS systems. The market can essentially be defined into 3 major camps: remotely hosted, self hosted, and community based systems. I have used pretty much every blogging platform available and each of them has its ups and downs. In this article I will cover the best options for each area taking into account price, usability, market share and of course SEO potential.

All of these products are either open source, completely free or have a functional free version. Links were stripped from this article so you may want to check out the original best blogging softwarearticle at ProfitPapers.

Remotely Hosted Blogging Software
(Note: I cannot really recommend any of these from an SEO stand point as optimizing a domain you do not own or control is obviously not a good marketing plan.)

Blogger

Blogger is completely free and currently owns the majority of the remotely hosted user base, but not by a land slide . Bought out by Google in 1999, Blogger essentially fired up the blogging trend we see today. It is by far the easiest overall solution to use and if you are a novice user looking to throw up some recipes or poetry, this is for you. Blogger is completely free and includes some great features like comments, photo blogging, and a basic community feel with user profiles. Because it is so dumbed down there are some features you may not find with Blogger that are only available through 3rd party add-ons. As a side note Blogger weblogs do quite well in the search engines and this was recently exploited with it being the first choice for spam blogs or splogs. A splog is a weblog used for the sole purpose of gaining inbound links or generating thousands of keyword stuffed pages with Adsense and the like. The recent Google Jagger update cleared a large portion of this up. Free.

Typepad

Released in 2003 Typepad is a product of Sixapart, the makers of Movable Type. it is largely based on MT but there are some major enhancements and differences. Your blog can accomodate one or more photo albums with auto thumbnail generation. You can easily add music, books, and other media to Typelists, which grab a thumbnail from Amazon and other retailers for easily displaying in your sidebar. Typepad is also a great deal more technical than Blogger so a bit of HTML know how is recommended. On that note editing your blog to look the way you want it also quite easy and Typepad blogs are known for being very eye pleasing, intuitive and easy to navigate. In Sixapart's business model Typepad is aimed at regular home and small business users while Movable Type is targeted at larger businesses or for internal intranets. Price: Basic, $4.95 a month; premium, $8.95 to $14.95 a month.

Xanga

These guys originated back in 1999 as a site for sharing book, music and movie reviews. Although it quickly morphed into a full blown blogging tool Xanga still maintains the ability to run a powerful review site. Xanga pulls data from several retailers like Amazon.com including thumbnails, pricing and a cover. The software also is very usable by novices with a powerful WYSIWYG editor allowing for easy HTML editing, adding smilies, links, and other symbols. By using Blog rings it is also easy to interface with Xanga's other 3 million users to share interests, ideas, and of course traffic. Xanga comes in a free and $25 flavor.

Self Hosted Blogging Software

WordPress

WordPress originally began as a mod of an older open source package known as B2. WP is MT's biggest competition and is often the bain of endless Wordpress vs Movabletype style threads around the internet. Although launched just over a year or so ago WP has really taken the blogosphere by storm. And with good reason - Wordpress is completely free under GNU licensing and is packed with many featured you will not find anywhere else. It is also much easier to install and get blogging for novice users and has a very large and helpful community. WP runs on PHP/mySQL and is quite scalable judging from some of the very large and trafficked sites I see using it. It also sports utilities to import files from Movable Type, Textpattern, Greymatter, Blogger, and b2. Wordpress recently upped the ante when Yahoo recently included them on their hosting packages, in addition to MT. I have to admit I am finding myself more and more digging WP and will likely convert Profitpapers to WP as I get time (it can be a biznitch). Wordpress is free.

Movable Type

Aside from maybe Greymatter (the original open source blogging tool), Movabletype dominated the blogging market share in 2002-2004. Released in late 2001, Perl based Movable Type by Sixapart has maintained a large portion of the blogging market share, due mainly to the fact that there is a free version (supporting up to 3 weblogs) and that it is incredibly powerful, intuitive and easy to customize. Template driven Movable Type also sports one of the largest communities of developers and blogging enthusiasts around, meaning lots of support, idea sharing, and of course plugins. Movable Type can be configured to dynamically generate HTML, PHP or any other kind of pages you like, meaning it is incredibly scalable, fast, and loved by spiders. It is perhaps the most well known blogging software for SEO purposes and it what currently powers Profitpapers and several of my other projects. Moveabletype is either Free with 3 authors, 1 weblog, and no support or $69.95 with unlimited weblogs, authors and full support.

Textpattern

Textpattern is the brainchild of Dean Allen and was written to ease publishing of content for those not inclined to learn HTML. Like WP and MT Textpattern runs on PHP and mySQL for easy administration, backups, and power. What really sets textpattern apart from the others is the integration of Textile. Textile is a tool for easily formatting content for those who do not know HTML. WP & MT have modules for textile as well but it is native to the Textpattern system. Another bonus of the app is its superior handling of comment spam due to its smaller market share. On a blogs I maintain running WP and MT I often find myself clearing out spam every day, whereas on some very busy textpattern sites I receive only manual comment spam (not bot driven). TP is open source.

Blogging, it is all the rage. The biggest problem with becoming a successful blogger is time and content management. Blogs are cool. Blogs are fun. Blogs are addictive. Blogs are time vampire and energy suckers.

Steven R. Coveys masterful "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" started a trend of listing better ways to do things. Even though cheating is not on his list, I’ll go ahead and borrow a page from his book (a great read by the way) and make a list!

1. Write a blog post everyday. This can become a daunting task. It does not have to be. At least one thing happens everyday that makes you think about how you do things in your area of expertise.

For example, today I was going to post on my blog about how it is important to watch what you say.

The article came to me after I realized that I was naming our revised custom blog pricing packages “Basic BM”, “Bronze BM”, “Silver BM”, “Gold BM” and “Platinum BM”. If you haven’t figured out why these package names aren’t really great for branding unless you’re selling some sort of colloidal or metallurgical solution for folks who don’t eat enough bran, then you may want to have someone edit your blog posts and help you with branding!

Every day at least one “Hmmmm” relative to your blog topic will come up. At least write yourself a note when it happens so when it comes posting time you will have a topic.

2. Create a “series” of posts. This is sort of a follow on to point 1 above. Hopefully your blog provides valuable information that keeps readers coming back for more, or even better subscribing to your RSS feed. If you have a “hot topic” that requires more than 1,000 words to get through, think about creating a series. For example: “Creating a WordPress Blog: Step by Step” could be your series. This could easily be a 10 part series on one topic.

3. If applicable add some personality to your blog. Ideally your blog is “information for information seekers”, but the fact of the matter is that your readers are people too and will identify with you as the author if you “humanize” your blog posts with some humor, anecdotes or day-to-day experiences.

4. Use real world applications to demonstrate to your readers the expert advice or information you are passing on. Given that most of your blog postings are going to be 100% test try to help your readers “visualize” the benefit of heeding your advice by demonstrating a real world example or actual application that you or one of your existing clients have encountered. Try for the “Hey, man, that would solve our problem, too” reaction from your reader.

5. Incorporate graphics into your blog posts. If you have graphs, charts, image examples or any visual or audio aid that can help your reader get the most out of your post, use it. The more enjoyable you can make the user experience the more valuable they will find your blog, the more they will come back, and the better chance you have to convert that reader to a customer.

6. Utilize the resources at Ezinearticles or GoArticles to add additional relative content to your blog. Make sure you give attribution (do not delete the links). You are not the only with good ideas, so don’t hesitate to add other author’s valuable content to your blog. It is only fair to give them the link back, it won’t really hurt your SEO rankings like a traditional website linking strategy. Ezinearticles is a great cure for writers block!

7. Do not forget to throw in calls to action for your reader to contact you. Hopefully your posts are valuable and you, the author, are becoming regarded as a “goto guy (or girl) by your readers. Do not forget to remind them that you are a resource and provide them with effective calls to action to reach you. 1. Get a Job- Obviously, finding a real job in your area is the best way to create a steady income, but does take up your time. Employers on your campus are usually willing to work with you on your schedule and will help you balance time between work and school. Fast food is another option and you may be able to work with a flexible part time schedule.

2. Sell Textbooks- As a college student I know how much textbooks cost. They are expensive to buy and you can't get much back for them. Although this seems unfair, this presents an opportunity to make money within your college. Post signs around your campus and advertise the books you have. You can sell them for less than what the school bookstore costs and you will make a profit as well as helping out another student. There are also websites that will buy textbooks from you.

3. eBay- If you enjoy using eBay for buying stuff, then you could try to make money selling on it too. You can sell the possessions you no longer use and get some extra cash. If you are talented you may be able to buy broken items to refurbish them and sell them back for a profit. Plenty of people make a decent income selling on eBay. You can try this, but I haven't personally done it and therefore don't know how to offer more detailed advice.

4. Online Surveys- How can college students make money with the least amount of work? Online surveys without a doubt. However, you need to be careful. There are hundreds of sites out there, and only some of them are legitimate. You should only join the free sites and NEVER pay for anything so you know you are not being scammed. If you manage to find some good sites, this is an easy way to earn a little extra money, but the payouts are never as good as the advertisements say.

5. Affiliate Marketing- If you have a little more time on your hands, then affiliate marketing is definitely the best option. This is personally how I make most of my money. Basically you put links for products online and when somebody buys that item, you get part of the pay in commissions. If you use blogs, forums, or other online communities, then putting up links would be even easier for you. It can seem like a lot of work at first, but the pay grows and it gets easier over time.

No matter which method you choose, I think you will find that there are many options for how college students can make money. The first option is already well known, but I hope the last 4 are new answers to the question of how can college students make money. Write Something I can Link To

I like to send traffic elsewhere. Love it in fact. I have no idea how many requests for link exchanges I get every week - more than I can keep track of. The thing is link exchanges are crap - or should I say the sites asking for a link are mostly crap. Too bad. If you want a link then write something worthy of getting noticed.

A few examples;

Carla wrote a hub a little while back that I have meant to acknowledge but haven't got around too until now. (Sorry Carla - please forgive) Aside from showcasing Carla's extreme talent as a writer this post is the B all and End all for anyone wanting to know how to use hubpages to its full advantage. Beginners - that means you! It's called How to Make Money Writing on Hubpages Everyone trying to make a living online should read this - downright excellent.

Note: Faith from Telecommuting Jobs totally understands how you can help yourself by helping others...

In the same vein, if you are going to target a niche (meaning keywords) then learn the art of writing long posts full of great content (for the readers) while laser targeting your keywords (for the search engines). The following post by Dave aka Mr. Dirty Boots is as good as I have seen anyone pull it off. Take a full pot of coffee with you - Dave's fingers were on fire for this Make Money Online post. Read it - he pretty much sums up 3 years of my posts in a single article - brilliant.

If you are a beginner just starting out online those two posts should be required reading - take my advice and study what they say. Btw - they didn't ask for links but they deserve them.

On a lighter note Terry wrote a post mocking the make money online niche which just happens to show you folks how to get yourself a number 1 ranking keyword in short order. Now his keyword may not get much traffic from the MMO crowd but it might lead to some decent traffic from the Spanish food connoisseurs. Lol Make Paella Online

Google Keyword Tool with Search Volume

Many of you have probably heard that Google's Keyword Tool has now added search volume. For those that haven't this is a major upgrade and I am mentioning this due to the number of emails I get asking about what keyword tools to use. It seems that not everyone is aware of what Google has just done.

In the past you could use the Keyword Tool in order to find related keywords in order to target your adwords campaigns. Google would provide a list of terms as well as show you how competitive each term was in the form of a little green bar - much like the PR bar. The problem was that this only told you a term had more or less competition than other terms. In other words it basically told you whether there were a lot of other adword campaigns targeting a keyword. This was fine if you ran adword campaigns. The shortfall has been the lack of actual search traffc numbers. Most of us don't run adwords campaigns (PPC) but rather want to know how many searches a keyword gets each month in order to create Adsense blogs. We don't need to know how many adword advertisers there are aside from knowing that a few exist. We want to know how many people are looking for the keywords we build our blog around.

Now Google is finally releasing a monthly estimate of actual searches done. This means that you no longer have to buy a program like Keyword Elite to give you this info. This doesn't render keyword elite useless though as it still has many other functions that are useful in regards to keyword research that isn't available elsewhere for free. It does mean that beginners can finally access search data for free from a reliable source - the best source in fact. Google.

I have compared a few lists between Keyword Elite and Google's Keyword Tool and the numbers are significantly different - not a surprise though as only Google will have estimates that come close to reality.

I ran the term "How to Make Money" through both programs and have posted the results below. I was always aware that the numbers provided by Keyword Elite were severely low in the past based on my own stats.

Here are the results for last month provided by Keyword Elite.

I picked the term "How to Make Money" because it is a term that I rank number 1 or 2 for in most data centers. I know how many visitors I had last month searching for this term. My own stats added up to just over 9200 visitors for that term. Keyword Elite estimated the "Total" traffic for the term last month as 7450 searches. I don't get all the traffic for the term but clearly I received far more than what the estimate states. I have long noticed this in regards to the estimates released by Keyword Elite and hence have known that the numbers are usually only a fraction of real traffic. I didn't know how low the estimates were however but now I do.

The image below shows Google's estimate for "How to Make Money".

As you can see Keyword Elite provided only a third of the real traffic. Google estimates 22,000 searches and this makes more sense and jives with the traffic I see. Position 1 should capture at least half the total traffic and I do in a rough sense. It's not exact as I bounce back and forth between the top 2 spots.

I have compared several other keywords that I rank well for and the Google search results do appear pretty accurate which of course they should - who would know better than Google?

The end result is that I encourage you all to take advantage of this resource. You can now know far better than before just how much traffic any particular keyword might be expected to produce. This is one of if not the most important factors to know before you start building your blogs. And it's free.

On another issue - let's talk about Alexa. Have any of you managed to figure out what the hell they are doing. I am mystified by the results I get from them. I see huge swings from day to day and yet my traffic is pretty much stable from day to day; pretty much the same amount of uniques, return visitors and page views and yet one day I will rank 27,000 and the very next day 450,000. I have been assuming that the "new" sampling they use has a few bugs in it to account for these ridiculous numbers. Since I began the new MMO blog I am even more mystified. The new blog is averaging a few hundred daily uniques and this blog averages several thousand. So why is my new blog kicking this blogs ass in the Alexa rankings?

I was hoping that the new system would prove to be reliable if only because a traffic benchmark would be a handy bit of info to have especially for advertising purposes or when purchasing existing domains. Making Money Quietly

Hey folks,

I think it's time to put in an appearance and quell some of the concerns I've been reading in my emails and elsewhere. Court's latest post Can You Increase Blog Traffic without Posting has an interesting thread going in the comments that reads something like this:

"Where the heck did Court, Vic and Griz disappear too?"

Court's post answers his absence and in my case the answer is quite simple - the summer is my busiest time at the Lodge and as my largest income producer and biggest investment I have little choice but to concentrate on it. The fact that my online appearances have slowed at the same time as Vic and Court's is simply a coincidence and not planned. Vic has posted a new video in which he explains his feelings towards Blogger Unleashed called My Status Here.

I have long said beware of chasing social traffic. Yes it has some benefits - backlinks being first among them but links aside it is a time wasting activity if you are trying to make money online. Vic's video sums this up better than anything I can say. Blogger Unleashed has over 3000 RSS subscribers and as Vic states he makes peanuts from the site. If you have watched the video and read the comments then you'll know that Vic is contemplating shutting the site down. Quite simply he is tired of the criticism he receives from people looking to bait him and the aggravation he has incurred as a result of giving out too much info - people reporting his sites as spam after showing others his methods. Considering he doesn't charge a cent for the info he shares it's not hard to understand how the backlash has given him pause to stop.

In this regard I am no different. I have been burned a number of times as well for showing people example sites only to have some jerk report them. The fall of Backlink Solutions still bothers me as it was a great resource for short term campaigns that generated a considerable amount of money for me. I had used it successfully for over a year and no sooner did I open my mouth about it in the forum and presto - Google slapped it out of existence. Coincidence? Perhaps. Then again perhaps not and I am less inclined to give away my little secrets now. This more than anything has me in a bit of a bind. I have no problem helping others out but I don't think I can be as open about what I do anymore. The irony about free information is that anyone can get it and sabotage it. If you pay for information and it works you aren't likely to tell others - including Google.

I'm not going to whine about this though. I knew the possible consequences before divulging my tactics and accept the results. The end result is that this is an Adsense blog and I continue to increase my income on this blog monthly. I could have posted fluff and still built this site to where it is now but without readers. I have chosen to write useful content simply because it is easier and more rewarding than writing about crap and the fact that I have developed a readership has been a pleasant bonus although not in a monetary way. I am not prepared to get stung anymore though and haven't quite figured out how to give out the results of my experiments without the proof. I had a comment once that remarked about me being a show off. This kind of took me back as I am anything but. I show results in order to back up my assertions - why do what I say if you don't know it works? I think from here on in my readers will have to accept more on faith than by example. My record should speak for itself and in any event I don't charge for the info. Either I am telling the truth or I'm just trying to get people to waste their time.

Many bloggers have described me as an Adsense blogger primarily because I have used Adsense as the main form of monetization on this site and in examples I have talked about. The fact is that only a small handful of my sites are true Adsense sites. I have promoted Adsense more than Affiliate Sales and Lead Generation simply because it is easier for beginners to make money with and more importantly it is more consistent in monthly earnings. Other forms of monetization can and do make larger sums of money on any given month but they lack the consistency of Adsense. I had planned on a long series of step by step Lead Generation posts that I've since shelved simply because I can't do it properly unless I use some sites I have built for this purpose. Unfortunately the days of revealing my sites are over.

There is another issue that has me severely bogged down - my email. I have thousands of un-answered emails in my inbox. I can't keep up and feel quite guilty and distressed about it. The answers for 90% of the emails are in my posts - if you are waiting for a response please start reading the posts. I don't have the time to keep answering the same questions over and over again. The remainder of the emails are from friends I have met looking for help with their sites - reviews, joint ventures and new projects that they have asked me to join in on. These are the most time consuming and I am now realizing that I don't have the time to do all that has been requested. There are several projects on hold that I really am interested in as they will make me money but I keep delaying them to help others whose projects have little value for me but will help others make money. I have to learn to start saying no. If I do please don't take it personal. I just need to concentrate on some of my stuff for the time being. Doing so will have benefits for the rest of you as it will give me new material for this blog that you can all use down the line.

Anyhow, that's where I am at right now. I haven't disappeared - just inundated with the side of social blogging that most of you are unaware of - it sucks up so much of your time that posting new content becomes a liability. A new post means hundreds of new emails and comments to tend to. This is great until you reach the point that you can't keep up. Something to think about if you are still trying to become the next A Lister. Ever wonder why they eventually just post fluff or use guest posters?

Just so I haven't wasted your time completely you might want to check out Google's latest tool for keyword research; Google Insights for Search which is still in Beta but looks really promising. This tool greatly expands on the Trends theme and is ideal for local niches. If you are trying to find the hottest keywords then play around with this.

Does Garry Conn Really Make Money Online?

If you are a beginner looking to make money online then pay attention or you will waste a lot of time and money getting nowhere. Beware of whose advice you take. If you are a regular reader then you may want to skip this - nothing new just a post full of keywords... oh and a little bit of a rant.

Do you know Why there are so many "Make Money Online" Blogs?

Because it is a niche that is easy to get social traffic.

Do you know why there are so many "Blogs about Blogging?"

Because it is a niche that is easy to get social traffic.

Do you know why there are so few blogs about "oil filters?".

Because it is a niche that is hard to get social traffic.

So why do people want social traffic? Because this is a good way to get backlinks. Sure they also want to become "known" and they are under the impression that you need to get a lot of RSS subscribers and eventually this will lead to making money. Underneath all of this though is the barely conscious understanding that you need Backlinks to make all of your dreams come true. This part is true. You do need backlinks.

The problem is that social traffic doesn't provide the right type of backlinks. What generally happens is this; a blogger decides he is going to make money online with a blog telling other people how to make money online. I'm sure you are all familiar with this thinking.

Here is the general plan that I like to call...

How not to Make Money Online

Get a URL with your name in the URL so that you can "Brand" yourself. Let's call it garryconn.com

Read all the other MMO blogs and write lots of posts giving out tips you read elsewhere. Check out Vic's Podcast "Fakers, Scammers and Garry Conn"

Get your name out there. Kiss the A list ass and be sure to add links to all the usual suspects who have social blogs that claim to show you how to make money online but don't. You know all the A listers who don't rank in the serp's.

Start a newsletter to increase your RSS numbers. (Aweber email lists are included in the Feedburner count - not just subscribers)

Develop a loyal following of a couple thousand readers.

Write a post telling people they will never make money online learning from a 13 year old which is so ironic - the 13 year old actually gets search engine traffic because he dominates the keyword "make money online". The 13 year old makes money online from a MMO blog - maybe Garry could learn something...

Flog all sorts of affiliate products to your readers whether you have used the product or not. Admit that you don't use a product that everybody who does make money online uses.

Write a post complaining about not making any money with your "make money online" blog even though you have been giving everyone the impression that you make money online.

Give your readers shit for not buying stuff with your affiliate link.

Complain about how all the time spent giving "free" advice on how to make money online keeps you from spending time on your other sites that really "do" make you money online. How exactly are all the tips dispensed on his MMO blog that don't make him money because they are tips about getting social traffic going to help anyone make money. If they don't work on social blogs how are they going to work on niche sites like Garry's Airplanes orEyeglasses blogs?

Finally give up and tell everyone that you can't make money with a "make money online" blog.

Start posting 10 non-relevant posts a day because now you are going to make money with Adsense. (Good luck with that)

After all you "do" know how to make money online.

I don't have anything against Garry Conn except that he can't make money online with a blog about making money online. How much time have others wasted by following his advice? Why should anyone read him then. Wouldn't it make sense to learn how to make money online from someone who actually does make money online from a MMO blog?. If they can make money with a MMO blog then they can make money in any niche. Just a thought...

I don't know him. At one time I thought he knew a few things but it turns out he's just another blogger who bought into the whole social scene portrayed by the A list. A victim no worse than Caroline Middlebrook. Both bloggers have talent - they quickly learned all the tricks of the social game and made a name for themselves albeit limited. Both learned the hard way that they can't make money with a make money online blog - at least not with social traffic. Both have MMO blogs telling more hapless victims how to make money online even though they don't make money using the methods they talk about.

In case you think I'm being hard on Garry Conn - I'm not. I'm just helping him out as he has asked his readers to unsubscribe from his blog. I'm just providing the reasons why people should follow his wishes. In truth you could replace his blog in this post with most of the 45n5 top 100 blogs that don't make money online either.

So can you make money with a "make money online" blog?

Yup.

I do everyday.

Do you know what separates people who do make money online from those that don't?

Pick a niche.

Let's say "Make Money Online"

Why?

1) Because it's a great niche for a flagship blog.

2) It has thousands of relevant keywords.

3) It can produce thousands of people who will spend money and click ads. Oh yes it does!

4) Almost none of the other 10 million make money online blogs get any of this traffic leaving it all to me and a small handful of others who "do" know how to make money online.

The screenshot below is for the past 20 minutes or so. It shows the traffic this blog has received from the search engines while I have been writing this post. It also tells me what "Keywords" were used in the search queries. I want to point out that Saturday morning is the slowest day and time of the week for this blog in terms of traffic.

The vast majority of my visitors will find my blog by visiting Google or Yahoo and typing in the following term;

"How to Make Money"

Just about as many people will use this term;

"How to Make Money Online"

In case you are wondering how many people do this on an average day the screenshot below gives you a rough idea - the stats are not for a full day though - this was taken mid-afternoon.

A note to Garry Conn who determined that there was no traffic in the MMO niche using the SEO Book keyword tool (wtf??) Keyword tools are horribly inaccurate and the one you used is worse than most - remember Keyword Elite that you don't use? KE is bad too but still the best of a crappy tool. (The best way to find out how many searches a keyword has is to rank on top of the serp's for it. lol)

See screenshot at the bottom of this post for an idea of what kind of traffic really exists in the MMO niche.

As you can see the term (in my results above) "Make Money Online" ranks a distant third as far as traffic goes. There are two reasons for this; I don't rank as well for the term and there are not as many real searches for the term as people think. It is a crappy term - let me explain.

Who would type "Make Money Online" in a search query?

Bloggers checking to see where they rank. The search numbers for that term are so inflated simply because it gets searched continuously by bloggers checking the rankings. Not by people wanting to know how to make money online - or very few and they click on my link in the serp's because my blog is "for Beginners."

Think about this. The people who are truly new to making money online don't type "make money online" in the query. They type "how to make money" or "how to make money online"

Something else you should know. A beginner is different from a noob. Noobs have already bought ebooks and have been scammed a number of times. Noobs know about social traffic. Noobs "Are" social traffic. Noobs type in "Make Money Online". Noobs are not the target market. They won't buy from you or click ads. They are tired of being ripped off and are on a mission to read everything they can for free in order to finally make some money online.

Beginners are much different. They have never heard of "Noobs". They haven't heard of anything at all except that "apparently" people can make money online.

So they sit down at the computer, open their favorite search engine that they use to find cheap airline tickets with and not much else and they say to themselves...

I wonder how I can make money online?

Then they type in the term.

And then they find me and a handful of others.

They don't find Problogger or Shoemoney. They don't find Caroline Middlebrook, Garry Conn or John Cow. They don't find 99% of the blogs that 45n5 claims are the "Top" blogs in the make money online niche. Beginners are noobs in training - they have yet to buy all the crappy ebooks. They will though. Someone wanting to make money selling ebooks and get rich programs should be targeting these people - just imagine if I was to start flogging crap in my posts. I get a lot of virgins to this site and they do buy the stuff in the sidebar - the stuff I have told my readers to ignore. It's there because beginners don't want to read about "how to make money online" - they just want to spend money on something that will make them rich fast. No skin off my nose - they could have read my blog instead.

I do use Adsense though and the beginners love clicking those ads.

You may think this is a MMO blog.

It really isn't.

And while everyone in the MMO niche has been building up their Pagerank and Alexa stats and RSS subscribers and getting themselves listed on the Top Make Money Online list of bloggers I have been...

Dominating the search engines.

You were all beginners at one time. What were you looking for when you first thought about making money online. Be honest.

You wanted to make money fast and without much work. You wanted to get rich quick.

Ok. Maybe not you but most do.

Beginners are the only people who buy crappy ebooks promising instant wealth. Noobs don't.

Beginners are the only people who cick on ads promising instant wealth. Noobs don't.

So if you are going to make money online with a make money online blog maybe you should target beginners and not noobs. Maybe you should target the terms that only beginners would use when searching for information.

This is called a plan. It is something you should have before you start a make money online blog claiming to know how to make money online.

And if you are reading a blogger who claims to make money blogging and they don't rank in the top of the serp's for their own keywords then you might ask yourself if they are really making money elsewhere as they claim. (Flagship blogs excepted) If they only know about social traffic then how are they making money with their "oil filter" blog. If they know about search engine traffic (it's the only way to make money with Oil Filters folks) then why aren't they after search engine traffic with their MMO blog? Moreover the few who do rank for keywords only rank for a couple and they are the wrong keywords. Problogger ranks really well for "make money blogging" but that's about it and it doesn't attract beginners - just noobs.

It doesn't matter what niche you pick - if you want to make money in that niche then check out the top ranked sites in that niche and do what they do. If the site ranks on top of the serp's in "A Competitive" niche then you have found someone who knows how to make money online because they know how to get backlinks. The type of backlink that gets you top serp ranking for your keywords. Not the type of backlink that gets you top ranking for your name.

Try and get backlinks for "Oil Filters" - it ain't easy and you won't be getting them from all your "social" oil filter friends.

Knowing how to get backlinks for Oil Filters is what separates the people who make money online from those who just claim to. If you can get those links you can rank for anything you want. This is how you get continuous traffic. This is how you get traffic that converts into money.

This is what SEO is all about and the reason I write 4 posts a month and make more money in a day with this blog than Garry Conn makes in a month with 80 posts. 80 posts - wow - hard to believe he has time to work on those "other" sites that "do" make money. I barely have time for 4 posts. Of course you don't need a lot of posts to make money. You need a lot of posts to keep social traffic coming to your site though...

If you are a long time reader then I'm sure most of you have been to Frank Carr's blog OpTempo. For those of you not familiar with Frank he is a software developer as well as a blogger proving that code monkeys can write coherent sentences if they really really have to. (well some of them can - lol) In Frank's case he has come up with his own content generator for creating keyword rich blog posts.

Introducing Blog Content Wizard

Yes this does the same thing as most content creation software but it has two distinct advantages over the rest. It creates content based on the keywords you supply and best of all if you run into problems you can use Frank's private forum for help. We all know Frank and can get real help right from the developer - a true bonus if you have ever tried reaching a real human when your software takes a vacation.

Will this program produce Pulitzer quality material. Hell no - not even close. Until the day comes when we can download a human brain into the software, content generation programs will remain a poor substitute for quality writing. The point is not how well the finished product turns out but how quickly you can turn out finished products. If you are building a farm then you need content - keyword optimized content. This type of writing is not for human consumption although it isn't as bad as I make it sound. This is strictly meant for the search engines and is the quickest way to produce content that will get your blog crawled and ranked for the terms you desire.

The Difference between Professional Marketers and Bloggers

I'm an Internet marketer who uses blogs to make money online. Most of my readers are bloggers who are trying to be Internet marketers. There is a difference. If you think that there is an actual debate over whether content or links are the most important elements in making money online then you are a blogger. If you know that links are all that matters then you are an Internet marketer.

Quality content? What exactly is quality content? Really. Someone tell me. And while you are at it please tell me how a machine can tell if a post is written by the ghost of William Shakespeare or pounded out by a high school dropout. Quality is a subjective term and no two humans will ever agree on what constitutes quality writing never mind a machine doing it.

Content is necessary to Internet marketing in so much as it is appropriate to the niche that is being targeted. Content is little more than using the right keywords in the right places and surrounding them with relevant text. The Google algorithm does understand how to rank sites based on these factors. It doesn't rank sites on the basis of who writes better. Content only needs to be relevant, it does not have to be good.

If you believe that it has to be "quality" content then you are a blogger who is targeting a "social" niche and you want your traffic to return again and again. Why I have no idea. If you have readers then you aren't an Internet marketer. You are a social blogger.

Internet marketers target niches that make money for them. They don't target niches that attract bloggers. They don't use social media. They don't post comments on social sites. They don't chat on forums. They don't write for readers. They build sites that target specific terms and then they spend all their time gathering backlinks in order to rank number 1 on Google.

I'm going to show you why social bloggers don't have a chance against an Internet marketer.

Credit Cards

Vic from Blogger Unleashed has mentioned the keyword "Credit Card" in his posts when trying to explain why making money online has everything to do with links and nothing to do with quality content. Relevant content Yes but quality No.

The keyword "Credit Card" is one of the most contested terms online. The reason is simple. Rank well for the term and you will make money. I am going to show you how to do it.

A professional internet marketer looks for two things when targeting a niche. A keyword that gets a lot of search traffic and a keyword that can convert visitors into buyers. They don't spend 1 minute wondering if the niche will get readers or comments. A blogger looks for a niche that they think gets lots of traffic and then they build a site friendly to readers (meaning "other" bloggers). Later they wonder how they can turn their readers (you) into buyers. They are still trying to figure that one out. (Tell me why you don't buy stuff on the sites you read regularly and you have the answer - bloggers don't spend money.)

Let's look at why the credit card niche is so profitable. And why bloggers fail at dominating these kinds of niches - the niches that make money.

Google's Adwords tool shows half a million searches for the term last month. This is an estimate. Keyword Elite shows 30k - also an estimate. I have said this numerous times before - don't believe the actual numbers. These tools are useful for showing you which terms are more popular but the actual search numbers shouldn't be taken as Gospel. These tools simply tell me that the term "credit card" gets more searches than any other related term (long tails). The Keyword Elite tool simply gives me an idea of Adsense CPC and how many advertisers are available. If the advertiser is paying $11 a click for a search listing then they are probably paying $4-$5 for content ads. This would equate to $2 clicks for you on your Adsense ads. This too is just an estimate and you could see much higher or lower CPC.

Step 2 - Who ranks on top of the serp's for the keyword "Credit Card"?

Here are the top 4 sites. Two of them have the term in their url and two don't. The 4th ranked site has the perfect url and doesn't rank number 1. This just tells me that the 3 sites above number 4 have way more anchored backlinks. It doesn't tell me who has "better" content.

Let's examine all four quickly. Guess what - not a blog among them for starters. They are all static web sites. Second they all have the same content - nothing unique or original. They don't have quality articles - they are simply lead generation sites listing dozens of affiliate links for various credit card offers. Third, they don't have Adsense on them. I'll tell you why that is important in a minute.

Oh btw - they are all "ugly" websites... do you know why? The same reason Google is an "ugly" website - these sites are built for functionality. They don't cater to readers. They want visitors to show up and click a link. They don't want readers hanging around reading and leaving comments or getting sidetracked with all sorts of "pretty" distractions that bloggers like to throw on their sites.

What do you see when you examine these sites? I'll tell you what I see...

I see exactly how Google works.

When someone types in "credit card" in the search engine Google has to decide what the intent of the visitor is for such a generic request. The visitor isn't asking anything. So does Google think the visitor is looking for information on the "history" of credit cards? Or which credit card is the "coolest" looking? Or which CC is the most used? No. Google has decided that the most relevant sites for such a generic term must be sites listing "available credit cards" or a "list of credit cards". They rightly assume that this is what the query is likely looking for. So why doesn't Visa, Amex and Mastercard dominate this serp listing? Because Google knows that anyone looking for such well known brands would simply type in the brand names. Since they didn't Google assumes that the visitor wants options.

If you ask for a history of CC's then you will get a "quality" blog article fromabout.com followed by a pbs.org blog article. Quality content? You bet. Will they make any money with their quality content. No. And neither quality article ranks for the term credit card.

The point is that all you bloggers need to understand that content has to be relevant to the keyword queried. In this case the most relevant content for the term credit card is a page full of credit card offers and not quality articles about credit cards. The most relevant platform for this info is a static website. You can create a blog and write as many high quality articles as you want about credit cards and I guarantee you will never see page 1 on the serp's for the term. Google is not looking for quality content. They are looking for "relevant" content. Period. A thin on content, heavy on affiliate products website is more relevant for the visitor, for this term, than your brilliant treatise on how evil credit card companies are.

You now know what type of site is needed and what type of content the site should have to rank well for this niche. This isn't my opinion. Google is telling you flat out by its own serp rankings.

So how does the top site get to be the top site. Do they have better content? No. All the top sites have the same content.

The top site has more quality keyword anchored backlinks than the the rest. Period.

All of you that think quality content matters (as opposed to relevant content) think about this. What makes Google rank 4 essentially similar sites differently?

I'll show you.

The top ranked site is creditcardguide.com and this is what it looks like.

Here is a list of some of the backlinks this website has pointing at it. This is compiled with SEO Elite.

I already knew the owner of this site knew their stuff but it only took 2 seconds to confirm it from the backlinks.

Check out the "Anchor text" column in the SEO Elite screenshot. The keyword "credit card" shows up often and is cloaked in various long tails. It's not just the two word term over and over. This site targets "all" the long tails and will rank well for a lot of them. This site gets a lot of search traffic on top of its main keyword.

Note: Most sites will have an abundance of crappy anchor text - the url or the name of the website is the most common anchor you will see. These links come from social networks and friends and other bloggers who don't know anything about keywords. When you see a list of backlinks that have more keywords in the anchor than crap terms you are looking at a site that controls the backlinks either because they own the linking sites (a farm) or they buy links. This site has almost no useless anchors - a sure sign that the owner controls the incoming links.

The red arrows are pointing to three links that tell the whole story. You'll also notice the site has several .edu links. These are all killer links. So did they come from stumblers and diggers? How about do-follow comments? Are they a result of article marketing? Bookmarking? Link exchanging with friends? Now don't get me wrong. Getting links is tough and all these methods do work and bloggers use them to find links for their blogs. But. The pros don't piss around with any of that. You are looking at a niche that makes real money and the people competing spend money to make it. This isn't casual blogging hoping to make a few thousand a month. This is a business.

Let me give you an idea about what kind of money is to be had. If I asked you who one of the biggest advertisers online is what would you say? The financial sector is a huge online advertiser. They spend billions a year doing what banks do - lending money in order to make even more billions in return. Is there anybody in the MMO or blogging niches spending that kind of advertising money? Can you think of any social niche that has that kind of money for advertising aside from the techie sector?

Let's say 500k people search for "credit card" each month and I'm going to be very conservative here. I noticed that the top site has an Alexa rank of 47k which means nothing except that this website does get a number of returning visitors who use the alexa toolbar. These visitors are most likely other marketers checking the rankings rather than real visitors (buyers) so I will lop off half the search numbers. This leaves 250K searches.

Affiliates earn between $25 and $120 for each customer who qualifies for a CC. Some cards pay up to $60 just for a completed application never mind acceptance of the app.

On any given day there could be 8000 people querying Google for the term "Credit Card" and 3/4 (6k) of these searchers will land on the top ranked site. Again being conservative, lets say only 1% click through and fill out a CC offer. That would be roughly 60 sign ups a day. 60 times an average commission of $50 is $3000 per day. $1500 per day if we only use the lowest commission rate of $25. This website realistically earns between $30,000 and $90,000 per month. It could be lower if the search numbers are way off or it could be a lot higher as well. Higher or lower - who spends more time working on their sites - you or the owner of this credit card guide? This owner doesn't post or answer comments. They change some links from time to time and spend the rest of the time lying on a beach buying links. Do you still want to work 7 days a week posting fresh content to keep your readers coming back?

Btw - I mentioned that there were no Adsense ads on the site. This tells you something considering 6000 visitors a day would likely click ads in the 6-8% range. (based on my own experience in similar niches). A 5% CTR would be 300 clicks at let's say - $2 per click. $600 a day - not bad. The fact that they aren't after Adsense just confirms that the commissions from leads is much higher than Adsense produces. (Never bleed visitors away from your main links with lesser links - focus on your money links)

That's a lot of money folks. Would I spend $10k a month buying links if the return was $60k? Yup. And so do real marketers. If you think you can compete in a niche like this without getting a ton of quality links then you are dreaming. If you think you can get those links using all the "social" means at your disposal you are dreaming. If you think writing "quality" content will get you ranked on page 1 for a niche like this - yes you are still dreaming. There is only one way in hell you can compete in this league. You buy links. And you buy better links than the competition. And you buy lots of them and you never stop buying them.

I didn't have to look very far to find the links I was looking for when examining this websites backlinks. The site has a PR6 link using the anchor "credit card". It comes from a non-relevant site but that single link kicks the crap out of a thousand do-follow links you might try to come up with. Here is the page the link is on. http://genamics.com/privacypolicy.htm and the red arrow points to it in the screenshot below.

The linking site itself is little more than a directory - a perfect farm blog used for passing high PR links for a price. The link in question is on a "Privacy Policy" page no less - a PR6 page. There is no reason for the link if you read the text. Can I prove this is a paid link. No. Do I know it is a paid link? I'm pretty sure. There are a few other links spread around the site that don't need to be there as well. Spend some time on Digital Point and you will find all sorts of anonymous sites selling links. This is the type of link you can purchase for a few hundred a month through one of the link brokers you will find on DP. It is a great link. The page it is on is not likely to ever get slapped by G and the competition can't really report it. The link is paid for but it will pass the test because it looks legit.

If you go back and look at a few of the other links I highlighted on the SEO Elite image you will notice the website also has a link from the Wall Street Journal. Very sweet indeed. Is it paid for? Who knows - the WSJ like many media giants is busy trying to make money online too. Do they use a link broker? Maybe. Everyone is looking for a monetization platform that works. The WSJ has a number of blogs that it operates and the link in question is on WSJ's blog "Independent Street". The link is on a fluff post and could be paid for or it could be the result of just ranking number 1 for the term. I have also received a few links over the years from the odd Media powerhouse - the last time was from the LA Times linking to my Asia'h blog. I got the link because I ranked on top of the serp's and the newsblog was looking for what it thought was a fan site. One thing I can tell you - links from the media giants are worth a lot of juice. This one is a PR5 link using the keywords in the anchor from an extremely trusted source. Beat that with your Digg friends.

The last link I want to point out is the http://web.mit.edu/foley/www/ link. This is a anchored keyword link on a PR4 .edu page from M.I.T. The blog is another crappy university .edu blog but the creator knows what he is doing. Can you tell if the link is paid for?

I probably made my point a few paragraphs ago. There is a huge gap between blogging for a few dollars and doing what the pros do. I'm not telling you all to run out and start buying links. I am telling you all to give the content vs links debate a rest. There is no contest - just in your very small pond out on the edge of the Internet universe. Professional marketers know what is needed to make money online.

Links...

And they know how to get them.

And it isn't using stumbleupon.

As for content - let Google show you what is relevant for your niche. Who do they rank on top and what type of content does the site have.

There is a huge gap between what the big players do to make money online and the social methods flogged by your local IM guru. Social traffic is for small players in a very small pond. Blogs can be used to make money online and fortunately for me most of the people using blogs are bloggers and not marketers. While they churn out quality content I churn out keyword relevant content and build links. They write for readers - I write for search engines. They don't make money. I do.

Making Money Online with Social Traffic

Can you make money online with social traffic?

This is the million dollar question and believe me people are desperately trying to do just that - make money from traffic generated through social networks like Stumbleupon, Digg, Entrecard etc. So far the general consensus is that social traffic doesn't convert into buyers or at least not very well. In fact, the only meaningful money being made from social traffic is indirect - sites that have managed to attract a large enough audience are able to sell advertising. They make money not from the social traffic but because of the social traffic - advertisers are willing to pay in hopes of attracting the traffic to their product or service.

Most people are familiar with the so called A-List blogs. These blogs for one reason or another have managed to attract tens of thousands of readers or subscribers and are able to sell advertising as a result of their large readership and their blogs subject matter. They post large earnings and this in turn has spawned legions of others trying to duplicate the success of the A List. So is it working? Not really but rather than dissuade people, as I usually do, from following this strategy I want to make a couple of suggestions that can drastically improve your chances of gaining a large enough readership to enable you to make money from advertising.

My regular readers know that I myself do not chase social traffic nor do I promote it. Search engine traffic provides me with a good income without requiring all the work necessary in promoting a social site. However, I am always looking for new ways to make money online and if it can be made from social traffic then so be it.

The blog you are reading is for better or worse, an Adsense blog. My goal with this blog is to rank well in Google for as many "make money online" terms as I can and earn money from the revenue generated from Adsense. All in all I have been quite successful and make a decent buck - about $100 - $125 a day. My serp rankings generate several thousand visitors a day - most from Google.

The funny thing is - I also have a lot of regular readers. Rather astounding in light of the fact that I don't do anything to promote a readership. I don't stumble, digg or bookmark. I avoid forums as much as possible (a huge time sink) and I have never made a YouTube video. In general I DON'T do all the things I see everyone else doing that IS trying to build a readership.

So the question is this - why do I have more readers than most of the sites who are trying to get readers? Am I doing something that they (you) aren't?

Yes. I'll get to it in a moment...

Some of you may think that quality of content has something to do with it and you are right - good content will make people subscribe and keep them coming back. The thing is almost all of you chasing social traffic have quality content. What you are lacking is a means of getting new people to your site. Most of you belong to one or more social groups and are able to build up a few hundred RSS subscribers and even a few hundred links from your friends within the social circles you frequent. Unfortunately you soon run out of new people in the group and everything stalls. No new blood - no new subscribers.

The trick to building large readerships is not found in the social networks - it is found in the search engines. The bulk of my readers haven't found me through social networks - I don't use any. Yes, a lot of readers have been sent this way from my online friends but the vast majority of my readers found me while searching for information on Google. Remember I push thousands of people through this site everyday and a few actually stop and read - some end up subscribing.

Now I know what you are saying - great if you happen to get search traffic but most of you don't. I want to make two suggestions that will drive search traffic to your social blog and both suggestions are easy to do.

I am going to use two blogs as examples. Both these blogs have great content and a small existing fan base. Many of you are in the same position as the sites I am about to look at so apply what I say to your own blog and watch what happens.

Turnip of Power is a blog about Social Networking. Turnip's blog is on a mission to find ways to make money from social networks. Using Google's Keyword tool there appears to be about 15k searches a month for the term "social networking" and another 15k or so worth of searches for related terms. Turnip has spent a year building the site and has about 180 RSS readers. The problem is that Turnip doesn't get any of the search traffic looking for social networking sources. If the blog did get search traffic I can guarantee the RSS numbers would be much higher. Turnip can make two little changes in order to rectify this situation - changes I urge all of you to make if you are after readers.

The number 1 mistake - of all time - when it comes to search traffic is...

Most of you don't tell Google what your main keyword is. You tell Google what the name of your blog is but in most cases the name of your blog and the subject matter are totally different.

I'm showing you the title as you see it in a browser window because this is what Google sees. Turnip's blog is about "Turnips" and "Power" as far a Google is concerned. In reality the blog is about social networking and Entrecard. In fact Google can decipher this using the blogs content but when it comes to serp ranking the sites that use "social networking" or "Entrecard" in their Title will far outrank the sites that don't.

Quick fix - Turnip should add "Social Networking" or "Social Networking with Entrecard" to the blog Title. The on-page title can stay the same (In the header) but remove it from the Blog Title tag and only use keywords relevant to the blog content.

Let me show you something. Turnip has 600 links according to SEO Elite and just about every link pointing to the site has "Turnip" or "Turnip of Power" in the anchor text.

As a result Turnip ranks number 1 in Google for the term "Turnip of Power" and probably ranks not bad for "Turnip". This would be great if the blog was about turnips and people were searching for turnips in droves. The thing is no one looking for blogs about "social networking" will ever find Turnip's site. Would you think to type in "Turnip of Power" if you were searching for info about social networking?

Quick fix - I'm sure Turnip knows most of the people linking in. Ask all the friends linking to you to change the anchor text so that the keyword "social networking" is used and not Turnip of Power. I can guarantee that any blog with 600 backlinks using the right keyword would rank on top of the serp's.

I have used Turnip's blog as an example because it is the type of site that contains quality posts and the owner has above average work ethic and most importantly some actual talent. Given a steady stream of new visitors there is no reason that the site couldn't gain a large and loyal following. The problem until now is that Turnip has really only used the Entrecard traffic to build the site and after a year this has only netted 180 readers. A lot of work for little results.

A note to everyone - notice that my link to Turnip's blog above uses the keyword and not the blog name. I have just given Turnip the first Good link in a year. All of you can and should link to each other the same way - use a keyword that is relevant to the site you are linking to and stop using the person's name or blog name.

Another site I want to show you is Kathy's Online Humor blog called The Junk Drawer.

I feel like a total shit as I promised to give Kathy some tips a while ago and just haven't got around to it. Kathy I am sorry but I didn't forget about you - just swamped. I have met a number of exceptionally talented writers online and Kathy is as good as they get. I believe she could become quite well known if only people knew she was there. The two things I just told Turnip to do applies to Kathy as well.

In Kathy's case her blog title is "The Junk Drawer". A cool name but not something that someone will type into the search box when looking for a humor blog. Kathy you can keep the name in the header but change your blog title tag to "Humor" or "Online Humor" or "Humorous Stories Online" or well, anything related to humor.

Secondly, like Turnip, Kathy has a ton of great links but all of them use "The Junk Drawer" or "Kathy" in the anchor text of the links. Kathy I know your fans love you (I do) and if you asked them to change the anchor text to various "humor" related keywords they probably would. Do it - you won't believe how quickly the search traffic will come.

It has taken me ages to convince people that these two SEO tips make all the difference in the world when it comes to getting search engine ranking and the traffic that comes with it.

submit-trackback.com and Trackbackspider.com - Two of the biggest scams online.

How much spam do you get? If you are using Blogger you probably don't get much - if any. I don't. Not so with wordpress blogs though.

Wow 79 new spam messages - half in the form of comments and half from trackbacks. As I was scrolling through the assorted dr*g and S*x spam I came upon one that made me laugh...

The highlighted spam is from the dipsh*t who is responsible for most of the crap you see in your spam folder each day. If you don't see the irony then let me spell it out for you - this Trackback spamming software that he sells and others use doesn't work. His own spam talking about how his software can fool the anti-spam software like Akismet didn't fool ummmm... Akismet.

A lesson for all you aspiring spammers - pay attention because you are all noobs and haven't learned how to do a little research before wasting both your time and money on all the crap being pedaled online by arse-wipes like the owner of Submit Trackback. Never mind that this nose-wipe couldn't get past Askimet using his product - his own website is a failure which should tell you just how ineffective his product is.

You would think a guy bragging about getting "Millions of links" would have a PR8 at least and should have ranked himself for all the highest traffic keywords online thus bringing in thousands if not millions of visitors a month. I can get a PR3 with a dozen links and my Make Money Blogging site has an Alexa rank of 285,000 and it only gets 50-60 visitors a day. (Alexa is pure crap and has zero value but I'll use it anyway.)

This joker also brags about ranking #1 for the term "trackback software" which is funny as a quick check on Keyword Elite and Google's Keyword Tool shows no searches for that term.

I have talked about this before - before you buy anything that promises to drive traffic to your site or claims to teach you SEO or guarantees you a higher PR check out the site selling the product. Here is a prime example of what to look for. This website sells nothing but spamming crap including the Submit Trackback software just mentioned. The site is called getbacklinks.net and I love outing this kind of sh*t.

By all means check them out and ask them why they can't seem to rank higher than a PR1 if the products they sell are so effective?

If a site tells you how to rank number one in Google for a term like "How to Make Money" then they had better rank number 1 on Google or pretty damn close. If they do then maybe you should listen to them - if they don't then find the site that does. (hehe...)

If a site tells you to buy something from them then at least check to see if the product worked for the seller - 99.9% of the time it doesn't so save your money.

So does spamming make money online?

No!

And the sooner you noobs, who get sucked into this learn it - the better.

Dumb question - are you looking for backlinks?

I'm posting an article below written by RT Cunningham of Untwisted Vortex. I have known RT for a while now and he has created a site which will enable users to obtain "relevant" one-way backlinks from within the community. I'm not a sales man so I'll tell you up front that it will cost you $12 a month to join. This isn't a pitch to make money though and $12 is cheap anyway - this is a pitch to see if anyone is interested. I'll let him explain the system below but I want to mention that this wont work unless we get enough people interested. One hundred would be good - a thousand even better. Is it Black Hat? Let's call it grey.

RT offered me $6 a signup (you get the same deal as an affiliate) but I have removed my affiliate link from the article - I don't want you to think I'm doing this for the money - I'm doing this because I myself would like to find another "network" for building links. This could be the best yet but not unless we get enough people to join who understand the value of "relevant keyword anchored" backlinks. I would have made the system free to use but RT is wary of the amount of spammers it would attract and settled on a small fee. Most link networks run $150 per month.

Btw - I say we but I am not involved as a business partner or agent of any kind - just a user and it's in my interest to convince as many of you to join up as I can. I want this to work.

Many of you know RT so I don't need to hype him - he's a good guy testing out an idea that should work. Nothing is certian as we all know things like this depend on the active participation of others. We all know how that usually turns out.

Is this Google safe? Nope - nothing is but this is about as hard to track down as anything I have seen. Hard because the links will all be from relevant sites - using relevant anchored keywords - and contained in a real post. These - in case I haven't mentioned it more than 100 times - are the best links that you can get. Bar none. They are also the absolute hardest for competitors and Google to spot let alone penalize. Remember that 100 or so links like these are what puts my new money making blog so high in the rankings, in a competitive niche, in less than 5 months. These kind of links are gold and as you all know are a real pain to get. The difficulty in getting them is also why Google weights them so heavily. Conversely do-follow comments are easy to get and not endorsed by the site owner and hence have little juice - if any these days.

Well that's about as sales pitchy as I can get. If you have niche sites built then you need links. I hope we can all work together and help each other out.

As Griz has mentioned many times on both of his make money onlineblogs, there are multiple ways to build backlinks. I don't want to spend any time rehashing what works because I want to emphasize a different and possibly better approach to building backlinks. Before I do that, however, I want to quickly mention what doesn't work very well.

Comment Chasing

A whole lot of people spend a whole lot of time commenting on "do follow" blogs in their efforts to build backlinks. There are several problems with this tactic. If the blog owner doesn't delete your keyword anchored in the name field, chances are that your keyword still won't be related to the topic at hand. While experts may tell you that any backlink is better than no backlink, backlinks that have little relevance don't do much -- they don't carry any link authority.

Reciprocal Link Exchanges

Besides carrying far less weight than one-way links, reciprocal link exchanges between relevant blogs takes up a lot of time. In my opinion, that time is far better spent on working out one-way link exchanges. One-way link exchanges are actually the same thing as reciprocal links, but without being directly linked. Party A links to one of party B's posts and party B links to one of party A's posts but from a different post.

The hardest part about link exchanges of any kind is getting the links with the right, targeted anchor terms. Anchor terms that point to blog post titles, blog titles, blog author names, etc. are just about worthless most of the time.

The White Hat Google Game

If you read what Google has to say about link exchanges, you have to write content that naturally compels readers to link to the source to be completely safe. It's a nice thought, but it doesn't work in the real world unless you're a socially popular blogger.

That kind of thing defeats the purpose of targeting search visitors in the first place and doesn't make any money for you or for Google. In my personal opinion, it's a smokescreen for what they really want you to do and I'll leave it at that.

What Always Works

Linking from within a post to another post on another blog with targeted, relevant anchor terms will always carry the greatest amount of link authority. You can get very few links of this kind and literally watch an optimized post rise to page 1 of the Google SERPS if it doesn't have too much competition. If you get a lot of links of this kind, you'll destroy the competition.

This is where ConnectContent comes into the picture. It's all about embedding relevant anchor terms into older posts or creating new posts around relevant anchor terms. The procedure is so simple, it's almost ridiculous. You list your desired anchor terms and where you want them to point to and other people grab that information and put it to work. The site takes care of the tracking part of it.

It isn't free ($12.00/month or $120.00/year) even though I think it should be. The problem with providing a powerful tool like this for free is that the scammers and spammers would come out of the woodwork to take advantage of it while everyone else would get left behind. Not only that, but I think the generous 50% commission could really be another asset for anyone able to drive the affiliate sales.

Would you get penalized by Google?

Since I announced the public launch of ConnectContent, the most frequently asked question has been "Does it leave a footprint that Google can detect?" The short answer is "No, not if you do it the way you're supposed to do it."

Ever since people were slapped by Google for doing sponsored posts (paid links), something I call "Google Paranoia" has set in. Everyone seems to be worried about getting penalized by Google for one thing or another. I think the biggest problem is that people refuse to read, or they don't understand, the Google webmaster guidelines concerning - Webmaster Help Center" link schemes.

Google talks about excessive link exchanges, both reciprocal and otherwise. In other places, Google talks about relevance. The Google search engine algorithms are all designed around relevance because that's where they make their money -- by showing AdSense targeted to specific content. Their automated spam detection techniques are also based around relevance. Their algorithms, other than checking for duplicate content, are very good.

ConnectContent is a link exchange in the loosest meaning of the phrase, and not much more than the web as a whole. The entire purpose of the network is to list what you want as anchor terms as opposed to people guessing what you want. There is no guarantee that your requested terms will ever get linked to and that's what sets it apart from other networks and it's why I think it wouldn't matter to Google even if they knew what links were being generated and where.

Despite my beliefs, I don't want to make it easy for anyone (not necessarily Google) to see what's going on. No real names are ever used and nothing is publicly displayed outside of the network. I'm more concerned with malicious individuals (your competitors) than I am with Google. The gist of all this is that producing logical and relevant backlinks should never incur the wrath of Google.

The future of Search Engine Optimization

This past year I have been fortunate to rank a number of blogs on top of Google's search listings and the result has been a steady stream of income from Google Adsense, selling Advertising space and Lead Generation. This is passive income that is generated daily regardless of how much I post and is not dependent on social media or social marketing. My interest online is to make money with the least amount of effort required. My methods are widely used by Internet Marketers and almost completely unknown to Bloggers. In fact, the prevalence of social blogging has obfuscated what was once widely known - that search traffic is steady, it converts into sales or clicks and it can be grown almost exponentially by simply targeting more and more keywords.

The advent of social marketing has produced bloggers by the millions, each one chasing a dream of large readerships in hopes of generating buckets of income. Each one almost completely ignorant of search traffic or the benefits of high placement in the serp's. The irony is that social traffic is much harder to get on a consistent basis, consists mostly of other bloggers, doesn't convert into buyers and requires a huge time commitment. Worst of all it generates no income until you are able to achieve "authority" status in your niche and are pulling in thousands of visitors a day. Even then your revenue consists almost entirely of advertising fees generated by selling space to other bloggers trying to monetize your traffic. They find out soon enough that your traffic doesn't convert either - how many of you buy or click on the ads pasted on the A-List sites? The A-List is fortunate that there is no shortage of new advertisers willing to fork over large sums in order to replace former advertisers who learned that social traffic doesn't convert. In most cases the A-List is paid to promote sign-up programs - more social media networks for the most part. An endless circle...

The fact that there can only be a limited number of A-List sites or authorities in any one niche is lost to the masses who believe they have what it takes to reach the top. Everyone, it seems, believes they have the right stuff. I have seen a lot of bloggers rise quickly - develop a decent readership, some good PR and just as quickly lose interest in their blog in spite of thousands of RSS subscribers. Why? They don't make enough money to cover the time commitment required to keep the blog fresh in the readers mind.

The alternative to social blogging is of course SEO or Search Engine Optimization. In truth this can and should be applied even if you choose to chase social traffic. I don't chase social traffic at all but because of my high serp rankings I find that social bloggers find me anyway. I mention this simply to point out that those of you hoping to gain fame and recognition for your work can achieve it by dominating the top rankings in the serp's and save yourself the countless hours of work needed to make a name for yourself in the social arenas.

As 2008 draws to a close I have given a lot of thought to how Google will tweak its algorithm over the coming year. Without getting long winded it doesn't take a lot of imagination to assess Google's predicament; the search engine has to have a means by which to rank sites based on keyword relevancy - the easy part and it has to have a means for deciding which relevant site should rank at the top of the serp's - the hard part.

How would you do it?

Would you rank sites based on their RSS subscribers?

Would you rank sites based on their Page Rank?

Would you rank sites based on their social links and traffic?

Would you rank sites based on their Alexa Rank? Their Compete rank?

Would you rank sites based on the fame of the site?

If you would entertain any of these ideas then your ranking system would lead to a useless search engine. All these methods are easily gamed or have no relevancy for the vast majority of niches. How would sites related to "Oil Filters" be ranked if Google used RSS subscribers as a basis for ranking?

Google's predicament is that it has to have a system that works for all keywords and not just those that apply to social niches. Many a social A-Lister has preached that Google will use social media in its rankings - a belief that I find laughable. Google has been eliminating metrics that can be easily gamed - not adding them to the mix.

Ultimately the only system that works well but is not perfectly fair is to rank sites based on incoming links. Yes this can be gamed as well but for the vast majority of niches this is still the best measure of a site's authority.

Rather than find a new system Google has methodically tweaked its system to degrade or dismiss links of poor quality and give greater weight to links that are deemed high quality.

Almost all social links - Do-follow comments, Bookmarks, Digg, Stumbleupon etc are considered low quality and while they may be registered by G they will not gain you top ranking in a competitive niche. They will work fine in an un-competitive niche but even then a single link from a quality source will outrank all your low quality links.

Google's algorithm will reward you well if you follow my recommendations outlined below.

4 Steps to Google Dominance

Keyword Research

Forget Quality Content (No such thing to a machine) - use Relevant Content.

On Page Keyword Optimization

Develop 1 way Inbound Links to your site.

Target the most popular keywords in your niche, add relevant content, use your main keyword in your URL, Blog Title, Page and Post titles and then spend the rest of your time developing quality inbound links.

I have said this many times - quality inbound links are the single most important aspect for ranking well in Google.

The 5 Measurements of Inbound Links

The Quantity of inbound links.

- This is least important but effective for low competition keywords.

The Title keywords on the page linking to you.

The Anchor Text used in the link pointing to you.

- You will only rank for the terms others use in their links pointing at your site. This is crucial for gaining top ranking.

The Relevance of the content on the page linking to you.

- The site with the most keyword anchored links coming from relevant content posts/pages will outrank all others.

The Quality of the inbound link.

- The best link you can possibly get is a PR10 link using your main keyword in the anchor coming from within a post relevant to your keyword. The further from this optimum the less quality the link. A few of these quality links will easily have you outranking sites with 1000's of lesser quality links.

I have not talked about Domain Age or the popular SEO blathering regarding keyword density, blog platforms, site design, posting frequency or any of the other "tips" spouted at length by all the so-called experts online. The reason is simple - it is all window dressing in the greater scheme of things and ultimately unimportant when it comes to serp domination.

The simple truth is that I can rank any site on top of the serp's with the right backlinks and provided the site has legit content (but only because it may get a human review - I could do it with spam if I only had to dupe the machine). How much content or how well it is written is insignificant for ranking purposes.

If you just have to chase social media then do yourself a favor - as you get yourself known ask your friends and readers to use your keywords when they link to you. Do you know how many times I have heard a social blogger tell me that social media is great because it gets them PR and backlinks. When I check they have hundreds of links using their name in the anchor. Yup - they rank really well for a term no one searches for. What a waste and yet the links could be so beneficial. As for PR - just remember this - your own PR has no bearing on your ranking. It's the PR of the sites linking to you that effects your ranking and only if they use your keywords.

Making Money Online is not complicated. Rank on top of the serp's for as many keywords as you can. Add Adsense. Collect money. Rinse and repeat.

It really does work and I hope many of you will achieve the same success as I have over the coming year.

I have been showing you one of my step by step methods for making money online. In this case I have detailed a process I use to either sell affiliate products or generate leads to sell to others. You can read the first two posts here: Blinkweb Tutorial Part 1 and Blinkweb Tutorial Part 2. So far I have discussed finding a product, service or someone in need of leads and how to create a quick blog properly optimized for the niche. This system is designed for new products or anything that has little competition - ie. a product that has no affiliates (Leads).

The basic concept is simple. All newly released products have no authority sites ranking for the keyword in the serp's. If you are quick, use properly SEO'd blogs and can generate proper backlinks (meaning keyword optimized anchor links) then you should be able to make page 1 of the serp's for the product and do it quickly.

I also mentioned that you shouldn't just settle for 1 of the top 10 positions on the page 1 listings. This is really the key to how I make money with affiliate products and generating leads - I usually occupy several spots on the page 1 serp listings. This dramatically increases your traffic and an increase in traffic means an increase in sales.

I chose Blinkweb, a new software program by Brad and Matt Callen in order to show you my system promoting a product that is likely to have a lot of competition. Brad Callen is well known in Internet Marketing circles primarily because of the success of two previous products; SEO Elite and Keyword Elite - both now considered standard issue for any serious marketer. The point being that if I can dominate this product then you will see how effective this can be with less competitive products and especially for generating leads.

I want to use this post to simply update those of you following this tutorial on my progress. The following screenshots will show you my rankings in the serp's for all the main keywords associated with Blinkweb. Remember I said the key is to occupy as many of the page 1 spots as you can...

Keep in mind that the serp's are still pretty fluid and are changing constantly so results may have changed at the time you read this and depending on your data center. However it is a good sign when you see your site or sites all bouncing on and off page 1.

As you can see I have managed to put my blog in a position to gather a lot more traffic than my competition. While I will continue to get better placement it should be noted that while position 1 is always best you can still pick up a lot of traffic with affiliate products even ranked lower down the page. Unlike people who search for "car rentals" and just click the top listing, people searching for information about a product - especially a new IM product tend to read several listings and not just the first one they see.

I apologize for boring my regular readers with this tutorial but I have received numerous emails and comments asking me to show you how I approach affiliate marketing. I have now shown you. I don't know if there will be an opportunity to make money with Blinkweb as the information we have so far is that the program is to be free. However these "free" programs usually have a not so free aspect to them and if it does I will be in position to collect affiliate sign ups and commissions for a brand new product that is likely to generate a lot of interest. If it turns out to be a dud - big deal - I'm out a couple of hours work in the short term but long term I will have another indexed blog with decent PR. Remember the Asia'h Epperson demonstration? In the short term that experiment didn't pan out - I couldn't get decent Adsense ads with it and the star attraction got voted off the show early on. Was it a waste of time? Nope - for those of you who haven't checked the blog is a PR4 these days and serves me for links...

Alright - time to play a little catch up here.

If you are trying to make money online then ya' might want to pay attention. This is especially true if you are one of the thousands out there dabbling in the MMO niche itself or affiliate marketing in general.

First off - the Make Money Online niche.

As many of you know this plain old Blogger blog pretty much owns the niche at this particular point in time. The vast majority of my traffic stems from Google and let me share some stats.

Search visitors per month - approximately 150,000
How many keywords do I receive traffic for? Between 5000 and 6000 different terms.
The top 5 keywords account for 95% of all traffic.
The term "make money online" is not the top drawing keyword... surprise! It comes in second. I am not going to tell you what the other 4 are cuz that would just be stupid but next time you are using a keyword analysis tool - including Google's - just keep in mind that none of them are really all that accurate. Not by a long shot. I get a lot of emails from people targeting keywords that are "supposed" to have 200 or so searches a day and when they rank number 1 for the term they find out that they get next to no traffic or none at all. The reason is simple - the estimates are wrong.

If you want to find the keywords that have traffic then write agonizingly loooooong posts full of terms related to your chosen topic. Then rustle up backlinks for all the terms you think are the main keywords and point them at the post. Rinse and repeat for every post you write. Google will eventually show you what keywords are really being searched for in the form of search visitors. Track those terms and rustle up more backlinks anchored appropriately and soon you will not only have a list of what people really search for but you should be ranking on top for them as well.

Now - what's the point of having a top ranking site in the Money Making niche if I don't know what kind of money it can make selling affiliate products?

Apparently my readers don't want to know how much money can be made or what kind of conversions a top ranking site has in this niche. I base this on the reaction I got from my dear "readers" when I decided to find out...

Sorry folks - I DID want to know and unfortunately the only way I could find out is by slapping up some affiliate courses (Court's) and affiliate products (Vic's Niche Devil). I didn't spend 3 years targeting this niche just to NOT make money or Not learn what kind of conversions could be made with a highly targeted SEARCH audience. So for those of you who were upset and feel that I shouldn't have bothered to find out please skip the following bit of info... (BTW - I have said countless times - if in doubt ask me about something you see on my site. I always give an honest answer. If I had said this on the posts it would have kinda killed the results???)

So - without further ado...

Adsense - after 2.5 years worth of results - maxed out at about $120.00 per day. Some spikes upwards of $200 per day but not an average.

All other CPC that I tried - maybe $20 - $30 a day. I can't get an MSN or Yahoo account so they haven't been tested but every other network like Bidvertiser, Chitika etc don't come close to Adsense.

Alright - Court's Keyword Crash Course.

I picked this course for a number of reason's; it is hand's down the best investment a beginner can make online if they want to learn how to make money online. Court teaches what I do - simple as that. I do SEO and if you don't know what that is just ask yourself how you found my site in the first place? I had no problem sleeping at night sending people to Court - he is as legitimate as they come online and I have yet to hear otherwise.

I added a link to his site above the fold with a short blurb. I still had Adsense up there as well. The results? Dismal at best. Hmmmm... what to do. Maybe pull the Adsense off. I did. The results improved immediately - from a few people a day to a few dozen a day clicking through to Court.

An aside... my first day without Adsense I did $350.00 (approx) in affiliate sales on the site. This has tailed off to between $250 - $300 per day on average ever since and why Adsense is no longer here. I have always said to focus on one form of monetization. It turns out that the 300 - 400 people who would click ads daily are also the ones who buy affiliate products. Adsense, in effect was sending all my potential buyers elsewhere...

(BTW - I have given both Terry of The Honest Way and RT of Untwisted Vortex access to one of my biggest affiliate earners and if you ask them they can verify the leap in earnings after I removed Adsense. I'm telling you this as some people still have doubts that money can be made doing what I do. I have made over 40K on this site from just one source - ask them.)

Back to Court.

To really see what kind of boost I could give him I decided to do a full blown post about the Keyword Academy and the crash course in particular - see original post Keyword Crash Course The results were immediate and pretty decent. I left the post up for 2 full months - roughly 300,000 visitors saw it. How many clicked through to Court's site? Just over 10,000. Yup - just 3%. How many of the 10,000 signed up? Just under 400 or 3.84% to be exact.

Many of you may find the totals shockingly low but let me tell you a little secret - 3% is a pretty standard conversion rate in the affiliate marketing world. I have seen this over and over again in many niches for many different products. And this rate is what I come to expect from products that convert well. What isn't a secret and what I have told many of you over the years - you need traffic, a lot of traffic actually to turn a decent profit and the reason many of you can't make money selling online is that you 1) don't have targeted traffic and 2) you don't have a niche that can produce the kind of volume necessary to make a consistent income. The answer of course is to just build more niche sites and make money through sheer volume.

I have mentioned over the years that I have made some pretty decent income using short term strategies. The basic gist is to get in early, cash in and move on. I have done this with blackhat programs like Voodoo Blogger way back when you could slap up hundreds of sites and rank them all for a short time using various linking techniques that worked at the time. Invariably G shut the door on every trick that the black hats could come up with but - and this is the important part - I made a lot of cash while they worked and not once did I say - gee... maybe I shouldn't have done that because it didn't last. Never once did I say oh man - I only made $15,000 gaming technorati but now they don't let me anymore so it was a waste of time...

Folks - I'm not telling you to do or not do anything. I'm just presenting things that have worked for me and what you do with the info is up to you. I knew Niche Devil was going to cause a stir but I couldn't really get into details on who should use it or how it should be used - unfortunately this site is to widely known now for me to elaborate. I had hoped that my regulars would just simply leave the post alone and those who are inclined to the dark arts would find a use for Vic's site builder but it wasn't to be. The comments basically killed the post and once I got Splorked it was dead. I can't give you any meaningful stats regarding sales, conversions etc but I can confirm that my sight is read by people who don't want programs like Niche Devil used - I'll let you figure out who that might be. Needless to say I will stick to Terry's Secret Society for any future discussions regarding the dark side.

I have talked about this program at length over the years and the post was for one reason only - to pass on info to those who have read my detailed instructions on how to use link networks. (On the private forum) The 32 spots sold out within the day and if you are one of the members don't be noobs - use it correctly and you will see results. nuff said.

Now let's talk about Problogger.

It seems many of my readers think I'm a blogger. From the bitchin' and whining I've seen in my comments and emails and on Ben's post Make Money Online with Work and Lissie's post Making Money with an Online Goldrush or Allyn's post Niche Devil (although he doesn't spell it that way - lol - btw - watch Allyn's Video's if you want to see how entertaining a video blogger can be!) I seem to have picked up a lot of readers who think this site is built for readers. It ain't! I built this site for search visitors first and foremost and guess what? I also built this site to "gulp" Make Money. I love my readers - don't get me wrong - but you guys don't pay the bills. By all means follow along and you will learn how I make money online but will you please keep in mind that I am using this site to test and experiment different forms of monetization. I have thousands of search visitors rolling through here each day and some of you seem to think I should ignore them and post fluff like Darren Rowse does? Really? Would you? I didn't think so...

When you are wondering what I'm up too why not look at what I'm doing and learn from that as I can't come out and tell you or it will kind of destroy my results. You will see a lot of strange things on here in the future so please let it go. I am always targeting search terms. Or funneling traffic. Or testing monetization. Or reinforcing previous posts for double indexing or keyword authority. (Like this post) Or helping friends with links and traffic - yes even sales if I can. (I know - how terrible!) If you want to learn things from me you have to let me do stuff to learn it myself. It is my intention to use the Make Money Online with Griz blog to answer your questions and provide results while I use this site to run my tests and make money. That said - can we please call a truce on the whining and complaining - if you don't like something just let it be or maybe stop and use your noodle and figure out what I am up to. Please just keep in mind that readers make up a small portion of my traffic. I know you tend to think I am writing for you exclusively but I'm not. I try and include you but my target is the search traffic. As for Problogger - keep something in mind; yes he seems like a nice guy and probably is but he tells you to just write good content as a blogger and the money will come. This is untrue and he knows it. He will never tell people that backlinks are the true source of making money online because he may fall out of favor with G. Yet - check out his main sponsors - the people who pay his bills. Yup - text link ads... people who sell backlinks.

Oh - one more aside. Every time I write a long post like the Problogger article (or this one) and engage readers my affiliate sales crap out big time. Less than a third of normal sales. Straight affiliate marketing posts like Niche Devil don't effect my sales at all. Why? Posts that are more Reader friendly send people hither and yon due to links etc and are time consuming to read. They (the search visitors) just don't end up on my money links. Short posts flogging something are either read quickly or ignored by search visitors and they either click out on the product's money link or one of the convenient links up top should they ignore the post. Keep this in mind if you are trying to sell something and using a typical blog post to do it. The more you engage your readers and the more links you have splashed about your post the less likely you will see results as far as sales go. This assumes that your readers are from the search engines. If they are just social bloggers then you'll fail regardless of what you try.

Let's wrap this up with a short message regarding my comments. This site produces a startling amount of email and comments - upwards of 5000 some weeks. Yes you read that correctly. Insane. Most of it is spam. I get 20 - 30 comments every hour from anonymous posters trying to get a link on my site for some product they are promoting. Not the usual Viagra and sex spam most of you are familiar with but from other MMO bloggers who hour after hour send the same crap. They find my site on top of their niche and assume I'm stupid I guess. Needless to say I delete them all but I tend to delete some real comments by accident from those of you who use the anonymous option while leaving your name in the actual comment. I try and skim all the comments quickly to find the real ones but at times there is just too many so my apologies if you get axed by mistake.

Okey Dokey... I have been busy with several projects but I think I'll get into them on the Griz blog in due course. Right now I have to work on my Golf game since it appears Tiger Woods is beatable after all. Y.E. Yang just handed Tiger his biggest upset at the PGA Championship at Hazeltine and millions of us hackers are smiling this morning knowing that Tiger is human after all!
